YEREVAN. – Armenia’s opposition forces will receive their votes separately, in the capital city Yerevan Council election on May 5, and they will have more Council representatives than the ruling Republican Party (RPA) and the Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law) Party. Opposition ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party National Assembly Faction Secretary, ARF Supreme Body Deputy Representative Aghvan Vardanyan stated this during a press conference on Monday.    

“If the Yerevan Council elections are not political, how can you explain the statements [made] by the Union of Armenians of Russia, or by the national minority organizations of the country, to support RPA?” Vardanyan asked.    

As for the chances of the opposition joining forces, the ARF MP noted that, first and foremost, the key issue needs to be realized, and he added that an end must be put to idolatry in Armenia.   

“One task is put before the opposition: To do everything so that the authorities change in Yerevan; the people alone will benefit from this. The authorities will follow the opposition’s work in Yerevan, whereas the opposition will create a counterbalance,” Aghvan Vardanyan stressed, and noted that, in this case, mechanisms would be created to oversee the political processes.
