YEREVAN. – The resignation of President Serzh Sargsyan will change nothing.

Armenia’s opposition National Self-Determination Union (NSU) Chairman, ex-presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan stated the above-said at a press conference on Friday.

In Hayrikyan’s words, there is no precedent in Armenia when the parliament resigns, but there is such a precedent in the case of the president.

“The fact is that, when the ruling force resigns, the National Assembly [NA] speaker, or the PM,—all from the same team—become its acting,” Hayrikyan said.

The ex-presidential candidate noted that the presidential elections likewise changed nothing.

The NSU leader stated that the president’s resignation will be effective if, prior to that, he makes appointments whereby the power is not passed to low-quality individuals.

“A knowledgeable person should be appointed PM. Subsequently, he [i.e., the outgoing president] should call upon the NA speaker to resign, so as not to become the replacement of the president. But let us consider this an imaginary move,” Paruyr Hayrikyan maintained.
