YEREVAN. – “I promise you that I will be more careful on that matter from now on,” Prime Minister of Armenia, Tigran Sargsyan, told reporters at a press conference on Friday.

Sargsyan stated the aforesaid in response to a journalist’s query as to why, following the September 3 announcement on Armenia’s decision to join the Russian-led Customs Union, the PM disregards the Armenian Law on Language and often delivers his addresses in Russian.  

In addition, the premier drew attention to a point. 

“I have made a lot of speeches in English, before the event you have recalled, [but] no one had made any remarks to me. 

“There is a specific approach toward the Russian language; this is objective and understandable because the prevalence of English is not so great among our society. Our society does not sense dangers in its knowledge, whereas Russian was dominant in the years of the Soviet Union, and Armenian had ceded its position to Russian.

“This recollection preserves the vigilance, and we need  to be careful toward our mother tongue,” Tigran Sargsyan stated.
