German researchers have discovered the secret of the formation of the hexagonal columns of the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland and the Devils Tower in the US.

Both of them are of volcanic origin.

Physicists calculated the energy that is needed for an equal distribution of the lava, and showed how the freezing of the surface has caused cracks resulting in the formation of rectangular columns, reported Lenta.ru, a Moscow-based online newspaper.

Further cooling of the lava, however, had reached from the surface of the cracks to the depths.

In terms of energy, it is more convenient for the cracks to form with a 120-degree corner, as it is in the case of these hexagonal columns, rather than a 90-degree corner, in the case of rectangular columns.
