Armenia requested the European Union to start negotiations on the establishment of a Common Aviation Area, said Garegin Melkonyan, the Armenian Deputy Minister of Economy, on May 17 in his interview with reporters after the 5th session of the Armenian- Polish intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.
According to him , the European Commission should have a relevant mandate to start negotiations. "The European Commission, under the EU procedure, applied to the EU Council. We expect that during discussions in June the European Council will approve that mandate , after which we will have a possibility to begin negotiations," he noted. The talks , he said , will not last long, because there exists is a certain format of cooperation.
"If negotiations start in June, I think we will finish them by the end of the current year or early next year. If such an agreement is achieved, Armenia will not need to have separate negotiations with all 28 EU member states, " said Garegin Melkonyan , adding that this agreement is of significant importance .
