Mexican telecommunications tycoon Carlos Slim launched a program to collect used smartphones for schools so that children could get access to educational materials, Reuters reported.

The owner of one of the world's largest mobile operators said that his América Móvil holding will provide free wireless access to the site with training courses for all ages.

The company will buy phones used for a year or two in a good shape for 500 peso ($26). The magnate  noted that  he would like to create secondary market for smartphones to help public schools.

Slim hoped that his competitors in Mexico, including the Spanish operator Telefonica, and U.S. AT & T, will follow his example and provide free access to learning materials.

The businessman is on the fourth place in a world rating of Forbes billionaires, part of the money he sends to philanthropy.
