One of the richest landowners in Britain, the sixth Duke of Westminster, Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor died at the age of 64.

According to the duke's representative, he suddenly became ill when he was at his Abbeystead Estate, BBC reported.

Duke of Westminster owned vast tracts of land in the north of England and Scotland, as well as an area of 121 hectares in one of the most expensive quarters of London.

The duke's fortune was estimated at $12 billion. However, after Brexit its cost dropped almost by $1 billion.

The ancestor of the late duke Sir Thomas Grosvenor purchased estates which would become the cornerstone of the family's later wealth in 1677. Today these are part of the wealthy Belgravia and Mayfair districts
