The Supreme Court in Dusseldorf sentenced 23-year-old Mark B. to six years’ and nine months’ of imprisonment, on charges of affiliating to the IS, reports the DW. 

According to the judge, in March of 2013 Mark B. traveled to Syria, where in October he joined the IS. In December of 2014, having been injured by a grenade shrapnel, he arrived to Germany, but soon left again to Syria, where he continued fighting for the IS. In September of 2014, he finally decided to return to Germany. For this purpose, he illegally crossed the border between Syria and Turkey. In mid-January of 2015, Mark B. was detained by Turkish law enforcement bodies.

Issuing the penalty, the judges took into account the young age of the detainee and his assurances that he refused to swear allegiance to the IS. Mark B also denies that he is involved in military operations.
