Sweden’s “Christmas Goat” celebrated its 50th anniversary, according to the BBC.

A giant decorative goat made of straw and wood, an annual Yuletide tradition in the city of Gavle since 1966, is brought to the town center.

According to an ancient Nordic belief, the Yule goat accompanies Joulupukki who presents Christmas gifts to children, just like Santa Claus, or Father Christmas.

In the past 50 years, however, this decorative Yule goat has not “lived” to see the New Year, since the locals have created another “tradition”: hooligans burn it down after Christmas.

But in this anniversary year, a video camera is installed on the “goat” to ward off the “arsonists.”
