YEREVAN. – A journalist has an advantage not by getting a press pass, but by gaining people's trust in the information provided, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, Washington bureau chief of the Boston Globe newspaper Stephen Kurkjian told Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent.

The journalists represent society, people who are in need because of the economy, education problems and a number of other reasons. The reporters must find a way to make the conditions of these people clearer for the country's leadership. The world is divided into two layers - the rich and the poor. It is the responsibility of the press to show how difficult the life of the poor is, Kurkjian said.

Asked about the secret of his success, Kurkjian said his advantage is that he lives in a country with a freedom of media, and it is this freedom that gives rise to that great responsibility, the responsibility to be fair and honest. He called to go ahead and never be satisfied with an easy answer.

“Try to find out the truth, do not be limited just by press releases,” he emphasized.

In addition, he continued, it is very important to understand: if you want democracy, where people are treated equally, tou need to have free media. The mission of the media is to strengthen the society, the famous reporter added.

Stephen Kurkjian is one of the most acclaimed investigative reporters in U.S.. A forty-year veteran of the Boston Globe, he is the paper’s former Washington bureau chief and a founding member of its investigative Spotlight Team that revealed cases of systemic child sex abuse in the Boston area by numerous Roman Catholic priests. The Oscar-winning “Spotlight” was based on a series of stories by Spotlight Team.
