Turkey should fulfill many requirements to become a full member of the EU, said Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme. According to Today’s Zaman, he noted that Turkey should become an EU member if it sincerely has will to make such move.
“I say ‘yes,’ if Turkey’s intention is clearly membership. However, this [intention] should be heartfelt. For example, normalizing relations with Cyprus should also be heartfelt,” Leterme said in an interview with Today’s Zaman.
Leterme considers that problems occurred as there have been problems in implementation of EU regulations so far. “A conviction about the membership question can be made only when it is known that Turkey complies with the EU acquis communautaire,” he added.
