French President Emmanuel Macron held phone talks on Saturday with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin before the four-way summit on the Syrian settlement to be held in Istanbul, TASS reported. 

According to the source, Macron highlighted the need for a political settlement of the Syrian conflict and wanted all summit participants to pledge to prevent the use of chemical weapons, as well as observe a ceasefire in the long-term in order to avoid a humanitarian disaster, the source said referring to BFM TV channel.

The Kremlin press service has not yet reported on the talks.

On October 25, Macron discussed the situation in Syria in a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.

The four-way summit on Syrian settlemented kicked of in Istanbul on Saturdat. Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are taking part in it.
