India has decided to extend $ 1.4 billion aid to the Maldives, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, New Sonair reported. 

His remarks came after talks with Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

During the construction boom in the Maldives, China built a bridge connecting the capital of Maldives, Malé with the main airport, and is now building the airport itself, as well as a building on a territory drained from the sea.

The latter circumstance rises fears that the Maldives owed China from 1.5 billion to 3 billion dollars, while now the President administration is calculating the debt.

According to Modi, India is ready to help the Maldives as their closest friend and neighbor.
