The Istanbul Convention won’t be ratified, but not because the authorities realize the lack of need for it or the risk that it poses for solidarity within the society, but because the Constitutional Court is going to recognize it as anti-constitutional. This is what leader of One Armenia political party Artur Ghazinyan wrote on his Facebook page.
He particularly stated the following:
“This is primitive trick that Pashinyan will use for two purposes:
1. To show his international patrons and those supporting ratification of the Convention that he wanted to ratify it, but the Constitutional Court was anti-revolutionary and led the “major” initiative to failure.
2. To help the extremely right-wing minority of the society raise another wave of hatred and intolerance towards the Constitutional Court, particularly Hrayr Tovmasyan and meet the overriding objective of ranking Vahe Grigoryan President of the Constitutional Court.
However, Nikol Pashinyan has to realize that if the government adopts a decision on initiating ratification of the Istanbul Convention, regardless of the outcome, Pashinyan will personally bear the whole political responsibility for this process.”
