Japan’s Empress Emerita Michiko on Saturday morning was taken to hospital to undergo a surgery to remove breast cancer, Asahi Shimbun reported.

The four-hour surgery is scheduled for Sunday.

On Saturday, Michiko will undergo tests that are required for the surgery.

The Empress Emerita will undergo the surgery at the University of Tokyo Hospital.

In July, Michiko was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer.
