A group of Republican senators asked the White House not to fire US ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland, CNN reported referring to a source.

The source told CNN the group included Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin and Martha McSally of Arizona.

Politicians were concerned that the dismissal of the US ambassador to the EU would look bad and told the White House that Sondland should be allowed to leave on its own terms.

Senators noted that it is not necessary to dismiss Sondland, since the diplomat discussed his departure with senior officials after the impeachment procedure in the Senate.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump fired two senior officials who testified under the impeachment procedure. They turned out to be US ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland and White House expert on Ukraine Alexander Vindman.

Trump fired also the twin brother of Windman, who worked as a lawyer in the security council - Eugene Vindman.
