YEREVAN. – The formation of a new “Free Democrats” political force, led by former deputy chairman of Armenian National Movement (ANM) Khachatur Kokobelyan is a result of developments in the Armenian National Congress a year ago, Deputy Chairman of Armenian National Movement Samvel Abrahamyan stated in an interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am.
“This is not a new process. It is the result of developments in the ANM a year ago,” he noted.
Commenting on the question whether “Free Democrats” may become an alternative to the ANM or the Armenian National Congress (ANC), taking into account the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovitch expressed her support to the newly formed party, Abrahamyan said: “This logic suggests all other parties registered in the Ministry of Justice may become an alternative to the ANC. The party’s actions speak louder that its formation. We will wait for further developments,” Abrahamyan stressed.
As reported earlier, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovitch visited office of a newly formed Free Democrats party and met with the party leaders on Monday.
The creation of a new party was the most serious split in the ANC’s camp after its leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan returned to politics in the autumn of 2007.
