Several hundred protesters took to the streets of Amman on Monday after the country's curfew took effect amid the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the protesters appeared in the central quarters of Amman, where they set fire to tires and garbage cans, TASS noted.

The protesters shouted anti-government slogans, demanding the lifting of restrictions imposed by the authorities on March 11 due to the increase in the number of infected.

Street protests were reported from other cities, with the most widespread demonstrations in Madaba and Irbid, where clashes with law enforcement forces took place. The Kingdom's Interior Minister Mazen Faraya, who is the interim minister of health, confirmed the right of citizens for protests but demanded strict observance of the curfew imposed by the authorities.

The number of people infected in Jordan hit a new high on Monday since the start of the pandemic. According to the Petra agency, citing data from the Kingdom's health ministry, in one day, 9,416 subjects were diagnosed with coronavirus, and another 83 died from the COVID-19 effects. Speaking at a meeting of the anti-crisis headquarters, King Abdullah II called the data on the number of people infected with the coronavirus frightening and demanded that emergency measures be taken.
