Armenian leadership does not intend to hold snap elections because he sees no necessity for that, said Serzh Sargsyan at PACE summer session in response to Armenian delegate to PACE Zaruhi Postanjyan’s question.

Postanjyan marked that elections in Armenia have been rigged since 1995. She asked the president whether he would consider joining the Statute of International Court of Justice, set snap elections and leave the office, since authoritarian regimes are doomed to collapse anyway.

“I think you have a different opinion on the matter. I always follow your statements voiced freely and easily in the parliament, on streets or in media. I respect your opinion but do not share it,” said Sargsyan. “Armenia has chosen the path of extensive reforms. We repeatedly call out to opposition to participate in this process, contribute to it by their estimations, constructive suggestions and their work. No, I do not intend to hold snap elections. Neither I see the necessity of it, nor the Constitution allows helding snap Parliamentary elections in an easy manner.”

“I do agree that an atmosphere of distrust, especially distrust towards elections, is prevailing in our country. Therefore, as I mentioned in my speech, fair and legitimate elections cannot possibly be enough. The society must perceive the elections as fair and legitimate. I call upon you to help create this perception in our society,' stressed Serzh Sargsyan.
