At Thursday's Cabinet meeting, the Armenian government gave a negative conclusion to the bill on making amendments in the law On Holding Detained and Arrested Persons.

The bill—authored by National Assembly opposition "Armenia" Faction MP Aram Vardevanyan, who is a lawyer by profession—proposes that the established exception—according to which visits by arrested or detained persons may be prohibited by the decision of the body conducting the proceedings, in the interests of the investigation, and in cases provided by law—be extended by adding other exceptions provided for in Article 48 of the respective law.

Accordingly, Vardevanyan proposed to clarify the respective law so as to exclude as much as possible the arbitrary restrictions on visiting detainees, and to clearly state the exceptions noted in Article 48.
