Indian authorities announced that they have given 2 billion vaccines against COVID-19, with booster doses administered to all adults as daily infections reached a four-month high.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the vaccination rate, noting the world's largest and longest vaccination campaign, which began last year. "India is making history again!" Modi wrote on Twitter.

Health ministry figures show that the death toll from COVID in India stands at 525,709, with 49 deaths reported in the past 24 hours.

According to data compiled by Reuters, the number of new cases has increased by 20,528 in the past 24 hours, the highest since 20 February.

The country of 1.35 billion people has lifted most COVID-related restrictions.

The federal government is accelerating its booster campaign to prevent the spread of infections, in the eastern states of Assam, West Bengal and Karnataka in the south.
