Steven Schwally, 64, is on trial at New York's Suffolk County Court for crashing his SUV into a Long Island nail salon, killing four and injuring nine.

According to the indictment, Schwally was intoxicated and told the police that he had drank 18 bottles of beer the night before the incident.

Schwally pleaded not guilty in court to driving while intoxicated.

He was taken into custody but may be released on $1 million bail pending trial.

Among the dead are the 50-year-old owner of the nail salon and a 30-year-old female police officer who, as colleagues said, was preparing for a wedding where she was invited as a guest.
