A court in Pakistan has arrested former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi until July 22 on a new charge related to alleged "abuse of power to purchase gifts in the state treasury of Toshakhan," Geo TV reported.

The National Accountability Bureau, Pakistan's anti-corruption agency, filed the new charge less than a day after an Islamabad court on Saturday granted an appeal by Khan and his wife, overturning the verdict in an illegal marriage case, the latest court case keeping the Tehreek-e-Insaf founder in jail.

"The accountability court directed the National Accountability Bureau to interrogate the two suspects in Adiala jail and ordered the couple to appear before the court on July 22," the TV channel reported.

In turn, the lawyer of the former prime minister and his wife said that the arrest was illegal, adding that their bail petition was already pending in the Supreme Court.

Imran Khan, who headed Pakistan's government from 2018 to 2022, was removed from office on April 10, 2022, following a vote of no confidence in him. In August 2023, Khan was arrested in a fraud case involving the sale of valuables stored in the state treasury of Toshakhan. Several other charges were later filed against him, including treason for distributing a classified telegram and several others. During the appeals process, most of the charges against Khan were dropped, but the former prime minister remained in custody on the illegal marriage case.
