Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) adopted a resolution Wednesday in which they noted that Georgia's regress from democracy puts the country's European integration at risk, European Truth reports.

The resolution was adopted with 495 votes in favor, 73 against, and 86 abstentions.

It says the ruling Georgian Dream Party is pushing an increasingly authoritarian agenda, particularly regarding media freedom and LGBT+ rights.

The MEPs argue that, coupled with changes to Georgia's electoral law and increasingly anti-EU rhetoric, the country's laws violate freedom of speech, censor the criticizing voices in civil society and NGOs, and discriminate against vulnerable groups.

Also, they make it clear that until the legislation is repealed, progress in Georgia's relations with the EU will not be possible.

In addition, the MEPs want a thorough investigation into Georgian police brutality against peaceful protesters who took to the streets this spring to protest against the "foreign agents" law in Georgia.

They are concerned also about the climate of hatred and intimidation fueled by statements from Georgian government officials and political leaders.

The aforesaid resolution condemns the statements by oligarch and "honorary chairman" of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, and leading Georgian government figures, who threaten to ban opposition parties and call the opposition a "criminal political force."

Furthermore, the European Parliament demands to freeze all EU funding to the Georgian government until its undemocratic laws are repealed.
