Azerbaijan has once again found a “suitable platform” for its old song about “occupied territories, refugees and Khojaly massacre.” Speaking at the UN Security Council’s open debate of the protection of civilians in armed conflict in New Yortk, USA, on November 11, Azerbaijani Ambassador to UN A. Mekhtiev addressed the “Khojali massacre.”

RA Ambassador to UN Karen Nazaryan gave an adequate response. He stressed that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict as preceded by well planned ethnic cleansing and murders of Armenians in Azerbaijan. He refuted the Azeri Ambassador’s charges of the “Khojali massacre” against Armenians. Ambassador Nazaryan quoted the Azerbaijani ex-president Mutalibov, who accused the Azerbaijani political Opposition of those events: they organized mass murders of Azeri citizens to later charge the then Azeri authorities with the crime. Nazryan stressed that it was Baku that provoked a military settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and Armenia had to interfere to save the Nagorno-Karabakh population from annihilation. Ambassador Nazaryan also pointed pout the enhancement of UN’s role in protecting civilians.
