President Donald Trump has signed an executive order ending US government funding for the National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) over their "biased and partisan news coverage."

In late March, Trump had called on Congress to immediately end funding for NPR and PBS, accusing them of bias. In mid-April, The New York Times reported that the White House wanted to cut funding for NPR and PBS by $1.1 billion, noting that this is only a small fraction of NPR and PBS's budgets, which are funded by sponsorships and donations.

"Which viewpoints NPR and PBS promote does not matter. What does matter is that neither entity presents a fair, accurate, or unbiased portrayal of current events to taxpaying citizens. I therefore instruct the CPB Board of Directors (CPB Board) and all executive departments and agencies (agencies) to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS," the executive order reads, in part.
