US president Donald Trump has reported that one of the National Guard members wounded in Wednesday’s shooting in Washington, D.C., Sarah Backstrom, has died, reports the BBC.

In his Thanksgiving Day message to the military, Trump said that Backstrom from West Virginia was an outstanding and wonderful woman who had joined the US army in June 2023 and was an exceptional person in every way.

Two US National Guard members became victims of an attack that took place near the White House on Wednesday. The main suspect is Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who had gone to the US from Afghanistan after the withdrawal of American troops from there.

The second victim, Andrew Wolfe, 24, was wounded and is in severe condition.
