Switzerland faces criticism for approving the ban on minaret construction. The ban is slashed by both Muslim communities worldwide and officials across Europe, that are astonished by Swiss decision and condemn it in their speeches.

Thus, in his interview with RTL radio, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner stated he was shocked by referendum results.

Swiss.info website quotes UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Asma Jahangir who called Swiss vote “clear discrimination towards the members of the Swiss Muslim community.”

The leaders of Muslim countries condemned the poll as well. The Vatican also scalped the initiative, saying it is a 'blow to freedom of religion', Press TV reports.

The ban on minarets construction proposed by rightwing parties was approved by 57% of Swiss voters in Nov. 29 referendum.

There are four mosques having minarets in the country, beyond two other scheduled to be constructed. However, it is forbidden for a mullah to call Muslims for a prayer. There are about 400 000 Muslim communities in 7-million Switzerland.
