Commenting on the situation regarding the search for servicemen missing as a result of the fighting in Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh), first Ombudsperson of Armenia, human rights activist Larisa Alaverdyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am that the process of gathering and processing information about missing servcemen is intricate and delicate.

As reported earlier, relatives of missing servicemen are holding protests every day with the demand for information about what steps the government is taking to find them, and yesterday the relatives were received by the Prime Minister.

“I understand the parents very well. Judging from the number of protesters, there are many missing servicemen. Since I know the nature of this work, I can say there won’t be results that can be reported to the public in two to three weeks. What’s more, Azerbaijan is creating obstacles. Addressing the European Court of Human Rights with regard to the confirmed cases of capture is another story. The authorities are placing the burden on the people or institutions who shouldn’t be dealing with these matters, and the executive bodies that have to deal with these matters aren’t receiving clear instructions from the authorities. The authorities don’t understand their tasks and aren’t fulfilling their duties. They’re not even doing that the government should do,” Alaverdyan said.

The first Ombudsperson very positively assessed the work of the group set up to collect and process information, as well as the relations between the Russian peacekeeping mission and the International Committee of the Red Cross for searching for missing servicemen under the supervision of Colonel V. Voskanyan. “It turns out that the authorities are only placing the burden on the shoulders of the Ministry of Defense. However, almost all ministries need to be involved,” Alaverdyan stated.
