The United States imposed sanctions on Iran's vice police after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was detained for improperly wearing a hijab. She became ill at the police station and died at the hospital.

The U.S. Treasury Department said that the vice police were "responsible" for Amini's death and announced sanctions "for the abuse and violence against Iranian women and the violation of the rights of peaceful Iranian protesters.

After the girl's death, protests erupted in Iran.

The Ministry of Finance also imposed sanctions on Mohammad Rostami Cheshmeh Gachi, head of the Vice Squad, Hajj Ahmad Mirzaei, head of the Tehran Vice Squad, and five other high-ranking security officials.
