The U.S. has deployed combat aircraft based in the Persian Gulf region toward Iran as part of a general state of high alert for U.S. and Saudi Arabian forces. This was done after Saudi intelligence reports of an attack by Iran on certain targets in Saudi Arabia.

According to the Washington Post, the jet's redeployment, which was sent as an armed show of force and not previously reported, was the latest example of the strength and importance of a partnership that is now being reevaluated.

Relations between Riyadh and Washington have deteriorated since OPEC+'s decision to cut oil production by 2 million bpd.

Many lawmakers, some of whom have long advocated cutting ties with the Saudis, reacted with even greater outrage, calling for the immediate withdrawal of thousands of U.S. troops stationed in the kingdom and an end to all arms sales, among other punitive measures.

But the White House, pondering how to fulfill Biden's promise of consequences, and despite its incessant anger, is concerned about the backlash caused by Washington's harsh response. Instead of reacting quickly, he is biding his time and looking for ways to get the Saudis back on track while maintaining strong bilateral security ties.

The White House, which confirmed a Wall Street Journal report on the recent Iranian threat and was on high alert, declined to comment on the launch of U.S. warplanes.
