A new film produced by The Genocide Education Project (GenEd) was released this month for use in schools. The documentary of 12 minutes length The Armenian Journey: From Despair to Hope in Rhode Island presents the story of Armenian Genocide survivor Margaret Garabedian Der Manuelian, which is told through the narrative voice of her great-granddaughter, 21-year-old Dalita Getzoyan.

The film was funded by a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and designed to support teachers in the region, Asbarez reports. A resource guide will be provided along with the film, in order the teachers could build a classroom assignment connected to the film. GenEd will hold teacher-training workshops in May on the Armenian Genocide and how to include the film into the education program.

The film testifies Der Manuelian’s story of survival of the Armenian Genocide and arrival in Rhode Island. It also provides an introduction to the history of the Armenian Genocide and discovers the influence of genocide denial on future generations.

“Capturing my grandmother’s testimony in this manner will help to ensure the victims of the Armenian Genocide are remembered. I believe this is what my grandmother would have wanted,” Getzoyan said.
