YEREVAN. – There more widows than widowers in Armenia, representative of the demography and census department said.

During the Tuesday press conference, Karine Kouyumdjian, head of demography and census department at the National Statistical Service, presented statistics on family dynamics and structure.

As compared with 2001, the proportion of men who have never been married has increased from 30.6 percent to 32.1. In contrast, the proportion of married men declined from 65 to 63 percent.

“Here, in addition to the registrar’s office we included de facto marriages and church marriages,” she said.

The share of divorced men made 1.2 percent, women - 3.8 percent. The numbers of widows and widowers differs considerably (13.9 percent and 3.2 percent). The average age at first marriage for men climbed to 29.6 and for women – 25.1, as compared to 27 and 22.3 in the 90s.
