YEREVAN. - In 2011 Armenian citizens consumed 48 thousand tons of beef, 10.5 thousand tons of pork, 44 thousand tons of chicken and 8 thousand tons of fish. Overall, Armenians used 110.5 tons of meat. Such are the official facts.

It comes out that each Armenian citizen consumes 38-40 kg meat in a year, or 3.2-3.3 kg per month.

Is that too much or not? According to minimal basket, each person should use 100 grams meat per day. That makes 36.5 kg per year.

This means Armenians use meat on the edge of the minimal standards.

To note, in other countries meat is consumed more than in Armenia, however there are differences in the kind of meat that is used.

For example, the Japanese use more fish than all other meat products together. The EU prefers pork, South America uses more beef, and the USA – more chicken.

Over 80 per cent of meat consumed in Armenia is beef and chicken. According to calculations, each Armenian consumes 17.1 kg of beef, 15.7 kg of chicken and 3.7 kg of pork per year.

The USA is considered as the largest meat eating country. According to calculations, each U.S. inhabitant consumes 118 kg of meat per year.
