YEREVAN. – Just a few days have left before the start of the nomination for Armenia’s presidential candidates, and the political forces need to express their position, ruling Republican Party (RPA) National Assembly Faction Secretary Hovhannes Sahakyan said during a press conference on Monday.  

The MP noted that RPA had already stated, two months ago during its congress, about its intention to formally nominate RPA leader and incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan as presidential candidate for next February’s elections.  

As per Sahakyan, the current pre-election situation in Armenia differs by its passiveness, and just a few days have left but the opposition has not yet decided on its candidate. “The Republican Party of Armenia is interested in having a strong candidate. It is better to compete against a strong and an organized candidate than [against] a weak [candidate],” he said.   

Also, Hovhannes Sahakyan noted that even if RPA does not receive the support by the other parliamentary forces, the latter are expected to conduct a “human” pre-election campaign that is free from senseless ribaldry.
