Regional elections were held Sunday in Venezuela and, as a result, candidates from President Hugo Chávez’s ruling United Socialist Party won in 20 of the country’s 23 regions.

In one of the regions, where the opposition candidates came out the winner, Venezuela’s former presidential candidate Henrique Capriles was elected governor, Associated Press reports.

At present, 95 percent of the ballots are counted and the voter turnout was 54 percent, gazeta.ru informs.  

Analysts note that this was the first election campaign in Venezuela in which Chávez, who is undergoing cancer treatment, did not take part.
