Press secretary of the Women’s Resource Center Elvira Meliksetyan said they hope that “the Indian Embassy in Armenia, and in particular Ambassador Achal Kumar Malhotra, will pay proper attention to incidents of assault on women, because they bear global character both in India and beyond the country.” She also stressed the necessity to take appropriate measures for the proper investigation into such incidents.

Toward the end of the rally the organizers and the participants handed in the Ambassador Malhotra letter with questions about the next steps the Government of India indents to take in the investigation of rape of 23-year-old student Jyoti Singh.

Last December six drunken men raped a 23-year-old student Jyoti Singh with severe cruelty in a bus in Delhi. The girl was taken for treatment to Singapore and underwent three surgeries, but died from the injuries on the night of December 29. This crime sparked protest action throughout India. Mass protests were organized accompanied by clashes with police. They demanded that the offenders must be punished and measures must be taken to combat violence against women.

All six offenders have been arrested. Five policemen on duty in the area where the incident occurred have been dismissed. The government of India has set up a special commission to investigate high-profile crimes and promised to tighten security in the cities.
