YEREVAN. – The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) election observation mission to Armenia publicized Friday its interim report on the course of the country’s presidential election to be held on February 18.  

The report specifically notes that the ruling Republican Party candidate, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan’s election campaign is more manifest, albeit several other contenders likewise are carrying out an active campaign.  

The report also reflects on the recent assassination attempt against presidential candidate, opposition National Self-Determination Union Chairman Paruyr Hayrikyan—who is recovering at hospital from a gunshot wound—, and the fact that he has not petitioned for the postponement of the vote. 

“The difference between campaign activities and state functions is not separated. Also, the OSCE/ODIHR [OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights] long-term observers inform about the campaign offices of the incumbent president being located in state and local government buildings.

The administrative preparation for the election is taking place in accordance with the terms prescribed by the law. The CEC [that is, the Central Electoral Commission] continues working openly and transparently. The media monitoring shows that the emphasis is placed on political information. There is regular media coverage of the candidates. Serzh Sargsyan and [presidential candidate, opposition Heritage Party Chairman] Raffi Hovannisian head in most of the TV channels. All candidates are using the free airtime,” the report reads in particular.
