YEREVAN. – Armenia’s opposition was competing in the information attacks during the capital city Yerevan Council of Elders election that was held on May 5. 

Ruling Republican Party (RPA) National Assembly Faction Secretary Hovhannes Sahakyan stated the aforesaid during a press conference on Friday.  

In Sahakyan’s words, the other political forces—except for the coalition government’s junior partner, Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law) Party—seemed to have joined forces and were attempting to form a united front for monitoring supposed voting fraud.

According to the RPA MP, even though the votes are already recounted in close to eighty precincts, the voting results did not change in 50 percent of these polling stations, and there was a difference of only a few votes at the other precincts.      

“Our votes, however, slightly increased in the other 50 percent of the polling stations,” Sahakyan added.  

The ruling party representative noted that the information attack, as to who will make more number of statements on election irregularities, commenced on Election Day. 

“Immediately submitting, to the CEC [i.e., the Central Electoral Commission], 162 petitions for a recount [of ballots] is unprecedented. For some reason it seemed to them [i.e., the opposition] that they ought to get a lot of votes, and if this does not happen, they seek other [respective] reasons,” Hovhannes Sahakyan noted.
