Neither side wants to see resumption of the Karabakh conflict, U.S. Co-Chair James Warlick said in an interview with the Voice of America.

During his visit to the region James Warlick said he heard a clear message that all parties would like to find a way toward a peaceful settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh.

“The clear message that I have received not only from political leadership is that the time has come to find settlement. And to the extent that the U.S., the Minsk Group can facilitate the settlement, we will be there,” he said.

Ambassador Warlick looks forward to working with all parties and finding a constructive way forward that will bring about peace.

Asked about militant rhetoric voiced by Azerbaijani leader Ilham Aliyev, Ambassador said: “I read that speech. We should all be concerned about rhetoric that could lead to greater conflict and not bring about peace. Our presidents, Obama, Putin and Hollande met last June and said we should try to reduce tensions in the region and avoid the kind of actions and rhetoric that could lead to the conflicts. I met with president Aliyev and I know that he is committed to peaceful settlement and I look forward to work with him. But all parties should prepare their populations for peace.”

The U.S. diplomat said it is a difficult mission to be able to prepare population to the time when there can be an enduring settlement.

“All the parties will need to work hard not only to finding settlement itself but educating people that this can lead to greater peace and prosperity for the future. There needs to be political will from all the parties to move forward. All the parties must be prepared to make compromises. Neither side wants to see an active conflict broke out. It is certainly not in the interests of people of Azerbaijan or Armenia.”
