YEREVAN. – There is the impression from the official weekly bulletin of the Central Bank (CB) of Armenia that the country’s market is “flooded” with US dollars, Haykakan Zhamanak daily reported.

“According to the weekly digest which the CB has issued, our banks have purchased around 70 million [dollars] from the market and sold over 145 million dollars during the past week. It turns out that our banks have sold about 40 million dollars more this week than the same period last year.

“[But] who has bought that much dollars when the ordinary customers [in Armenia] have not been able to buy dollars from the banks at least this week? This means that there are privileged people in Armenia. 

“Technically, the CB can publicize the names of those privileged buyers one by one unless, of course, the CB provides a ‘roof’ support to those privileged,” Haykakan Zhamanak wrote.
