YEREVAN. – On July 5, Armenia marks Constitution Day. On that day in 1995, the draft of the country’s Fundamental Law was put to a referendum. The opposition of that time considered the results of the referendum falsified, but according to the official data the Constitution was adopted. It was the first Constitution of the independent Armenia.

Pursuant to the commitments to the Council of Europe, amendments were made to the Constitution in 2005. With these amendments, the powers of the National Assembly were broadened.

According to the Constitution, Armenia is a country with a semi-presidential system of governance. Legislative power in the country is vested in the National Assembly, the executive power being exercised by the Government. The President of Armenia is the guarantor of the independence, territorial integrity and security of the country.
