YEREVAN. – The fight against the increase in the electricity prices in Armenia is not a political battle.

The first Human Rights Defender of Armenia, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO Executive Director, and public activist Larisa Alaverdyan stated the abovementioned at a press conference on Thursday.

“This movement has no political objective, and they are very honest in saying ‘we are not political,’” said Alaverdyan. She added, however, that the view, according to which there is a political movement within every movement, is correct.

In her words, it is wrong that the Armenian authorities are sending the police to meet with the demonstrators, instead of talking with the protesters themselves, since it is not the law enforcement that resolves social and economic issues in the country.

“This bespeaks the helplessness of the given government,” stated the first ombudswoman of Armenia. “The forceful methods are not effective here.”

As per Larisa Alaverdyan, the Armenian body politic fights for its problems at a very high level, whereas the authorities do not change their manner, and the societal development and manifestations are one step higher than those of the authorities.
