YEREVAN. – Armenia can be considered a pole of stability in the region.

French Ambassador Jean-François Charpentier noted the above-said at a press conference on Monday, and in response to a query on the democratic development of Armenia.

The French diplomat added that the situation in the country is satisfactory in terms of the legitimacy of elections.

“Our overall assessment is that Armenia is on the right track, albeit there are problem areas,” said the ambassador.

Charpentier stressed that he followed the most recent protests in capital city Yerevan, and against the recent decision to raise the price of electricity in the country. The diplomat noted that even though these events are Armenia’s domestic affairs, the common desire is that the matter is resolved as soon as possible.

“It is normal for a democratic country when people express their views and complaints,” said the French Ambassador. “But the authorities need to intervene and ensure law and order.”
