YEREVAN. - Among various apparent problems in Yerevan, there are also such which the authorities seem to have merely forgotten. One of these relates to the canals flowing through the capital.

The length of Lower Hrazdan canal is 53 km, its depth in several parts reaching 3,2 m. The current is fast enough. The situation becomes even worse considering that the canals are not dammed in several parts of the city. Besides, because of the absence of any warning signs, an ignorant person can easily appear there.

This poses an actual threat to the life and health of passers-by. Unfortunately, this danger is not hypothetical: the canals have already served as a reason of several people’s death in different years.

In connection with this problem, Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent talked to Samvel Hovhannisyan, the director of “Sevan-Hrazdan Jrar” CJSC, which controls the Lower Hrazdan Canal.

Hovhannisyan agreed that the absence of dams poses a threat. “The issue does exist, but we are not legally responsible for installing dams along the canal. In any case, we are doing our best to ensure security in the framework of our financial means,” Samvel Hovhannisyan said, adding that his company possesses no means for installing dams along the entire perimeter.

According to him, they used to continually install dams in several places in the city, but the dams disappeared after a while.
