YEREVAN. - Young activists Grigor Ghahramanyan and Garik Galstyan launched an open-ended sit-in in front of the Armenian Government building. The activists demand to clear the wage arrears of “Nairit” rubber plant workers and re-operate it.

“None of our relatives has worked or is working in the plant, but we’ll struggle against injustice. We’ll stay here unless corresponding documents are presented on when the wage arrears will be cleared. We’ll also try to prove the Nairit plant workers that the street struggle may yield results,” activist Grigor Ghahramyan said.

Nairit workers yesterday announced that today they are starting an open-ended sit-in in front of the government, but the young men were joined by only two plant workers, who later left.  

Although plant workers weren’t satisfied by the promise of Armenia’s Energy Minister Yervand Zakharyan to wait for 12 days and then completely receive their salaries, they decided to wait and refrain from holding large-scale actions during that period. The plant workers only protest in front of the government building every day.  

Earlier, Energy Minister Yervand Zakharyan had a meeting with the plant workers, stating that their wage arrears will be cleared before July 15 upon the decision of the President. But up to now, no amount has been transferred to the accounts of the workers. The workers had to sign an agreement of withdrawal from penalties for late payment of their salaries, and only then receive them.
