YEREVAN. - The institute of electors is set up so that local self-government authorities can also take part in presidential elections, Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov told Armenian News – NEWS.am Thursday after the RPA Executive body session.

He said that according to the new Constitution, the Electoral College will consist of MPs and representatives of local administrations.

“If, say, the RPA becomes majority in the parliament, it chooses any candidate for the president, and of course, its candidate gets the post of the president. The president is elected by Electoral College. The institute of electors is established so that local self-governing authorities can also take part in presidential elections, so that we can hear the voice of the communities as well and everything is not concentrated in the hands of MPs. That is, wider democracy is ensured,” Sharmazanov said.

Other details on the future college will already be discussed in the parliament.
