The Armenian Genocide issue is a matter toward which we take a very responsible approach, and I feel deeply offended that my country—the US—has not yet recognized the genocide.

American Armenian Congresswoman Jackie Kanchelian-Speier noted the aforesaid to the Voice of America Armenian Service. She added that the US is obligated to acknowledge Armenian Genocide so as not to betray the American Armenian community and its own values.

Kanchelian-Speier also noted that Christian heritage is under serious threat in Turkey and the Middle East, and therefore this matter needs to be voiced.

Commenting on the US assistance to Armenia, and responding to the query on whether it is also time for the US to help Armenia develop economically, the congresswoman stated that both must continue.

She added, however, that the American aid to Armenia was reduced from $44 million to $20 million over the course of the past five years, whereas the aid to several other countries has greatly increased.

Kanchelian-Speier noted that Armenia is in a blockade, and they realize that the country maintains strong relations with Russia. But the US likewise needs to maintain close ties with Armenia.

As for Armenian-American relations, the congresswoman said the American Armenian community plays an important role in the strengthening of these relations, and the large Diaspora Armenian community stands ready to help Armenia. As per Kanchelian-Speier, however, this assistance shall be reflected on legislative activities, as well.

According to the American Armenian congresswoman, Armenia, for its part, could play an important role in US-Russia and US-Turkey relations.

Jackie Kanchelian-Speier believes, however, that the US, by recognizing the Armenian Genocide, should first defend its own humanitarian principles, and this will be the only way to contribute to the development of Armenian-Turkish relations.
