YEREVAN. – The European Union (EU) should not equalize the Armenian and Azerbaijani parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
The President of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, on Monday stated the abovementioned at his talk—in capital city Yerevan—with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk.
Sargsyan noted that Azerbaijan, by hosting the 2015 European Games, presented a great “gift” to the Armenian party because thanks to these games, the situation remained calm on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and the Line of Contact with Nagorno-Karabakh.
As per the President, this “gift” is the fact that the international community was finally convinced who initiates clashes and creates tension, and at whose wish young people may get killed, or the ceasefire may be maintained.
“This is very important. And here I appeal to Mr. Tusk and all European organizations that they reject the policy of equalization [between the parties to the Karabakh conflict]; this causes a climate of impunity and self-confidence.
“Now, about the open and arrogant statement, which the president of Azerbaijan has permitted himself [to make]. We have learned that such brazen statements reach absurdity.
“[But] I am confident that even though the ‘smell’ of [Azerbaijani] oil and [natural] gas ‘spins’ many people’s heads in Europe, we anyhow will stand on the right path. Otherwise, everyone will start forgiving not just the words, but the actions by the president of Azerbaijan,” the Armenian President specifically noted.
