YEREVAN. - Commemoration of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima took place in Yerevan today. The event was held by the Peace Stone installed in children’s park in Yerevan. This is one of the 188 tiles retrieved from the pavement of the railway near the bank of a river located 200 m far from the ground zero.
“Exactly 70 years ago, merely one bomb in the city of Hiroshima resulted in the death of nearly 140,000 innocent people. Right after this tragic event, a memorial commemorating the victims of the atomic bombing and the rest of the victims’ souls was installed. The inscription on the monument reads: "Let all the souls here rest in peace for we shall not repeat the evil."
This is a message from all the humanity, in which the peace-making spirit of Hiroshima is very vividly expressed. We must strive for a harmonious co-existence and prosperity of the entire humanity, [as well as] wish achievement of genuine peace in the entire world,” Japanese Ambassador to Armenia Eiji Taguchi said.
Karine Piliposyan, director of the Armenian-Japanese Scientific, Educational and Cultural Center “Hikari,” reminded that the Armenian children have started a tradition of sending peace lanterns and paper cranes to Japan every year.
“I’d like to say on behalf of everyone present: Let A-bomb never and nowhere explode again, let never and nowhere exterminations and genocides be committed, let no child be killed or deprived of his homeland because of war, let the peace triumph!” she said.
The U bomb code-named "Little Boy" was targeted at the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 by the US bomber B-29 Enola Gay, resulting in the deaths of 70-100 thousand people in one second. By the end of 1945, the number of the dead reached 140,000. The United States dropped the second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki on August 9. Consequently, 60-80,000 people died.
